================================= Dragon Warrior Speedrun III route ================================= I start the timer at Power On and stop when the King of Tantegel shuts up; if you have other opinions on how to do it, feel free to do it your way. - My reasoning for this is just that I've always wanted the file creation to happen while the timer's running, if possible, and now it is possible. Start off by making sure the savefiles are saved in order 1/2/3 in SRAM - I *think* that deleting all of your saved files accomplishes this, but I thought I observed the contrary on an emulator... - Delete all files (delete them in order 3-1-2 if you're paranoid about the above, but at this time I don't think that's necessary) - Create the following character in File 2: "am", Sex: F, MS 6 (Checksum $AFF5) (Breaks RNG, turns it into a counter) - Create the following character in File 3: "vb", Sex: M, MS 5 (Used for Metal Slime manips and Baramos' Castle manip) - Note: In SRAM, the files are now in order 3-1-2; when you create the file you're playing on 1 and 3 will swap. Create the file you're playing on in File 1 (MS 8, name/gender doesn't really matter. Shorter names save time during character creation, but don't matter much during the run.) - Talk to the king - Sell copper sword and leather armor, buy seven wings - Assemble the team: Fighter/Wizard/Fighter or Soldier/Wizard/Fighter (Haven't tried Soldier route yet, but be prepared to not have any gold ever) - Re-order the party (Fighter/Soldier, Hero, Wizard, Fighter) - "View List" to save the game - Reset and reload your save. RNG will be seeded with file 2's checksum. Wing out of town and walk all the way left and two steps up, wait until next step won't be a battle - Wait for HUD to pop up, press left, wait until it pops up again, wait a very short amount of time, and start moving - I wait for the hero to pull his sword left after the menu pops up the second time. Experiment with the timing yourself and get used to it, then play it safe. Doesn't matter if the RNG ticks an extra time. - Walk to the Thief Key. Run from the one fight you get into. You will survive it. - Jump off of tower and wing to Aliahan - There is a POSSIBILITY that you will hit an encounter when you fall out of the tower, which will freeze the game. It hasn't happened to me yet, and might not be possible. One of the 16 outcomes of the previous fight could cause it, but I haven't tested them all. - Buy three herbs. Use the inn if you didn't run first try or buy a fourth herb otherwise. - Save at Luisa again, and reset and reload your save. RNG will be seeded with file 2's checksum. Wing out of Aliahan - Walk to Reeve - Get Magic Ball (Don't waste too much time in Reeve, but nbd if you screw up movement) - The walking NPCs in Reeve progress the RNG counter. The longer you dawdle, the sooner you'll get a fight in the Cave of Enticement - Wing to Reeve after getting the ball and start walking toward Kanave - You will get into a fight on the first monster floor of Cave of Enticement, in the bottom-right corner. - If you successfully run on the SECOND turn, you will get into another fight very soon after and the same thing will happen until you are killed or you avoid the encounter - If this happens, use some herbs three steps after the partitian (sooner if you screwed up movement earlier) - Honestly if you messed up the movement, you're screwed. When I got a fight on the partitian my game froze, and I don't know if four herbs will dodge it. - You can still die on the way to Reeve even though this RNG-breaking seed is OP. Still more reliable than the old way. - Oh, right. Tag Romaly on the way to Kanave. It seems to always hit night right when I step on Kanave, but there -should- be some RNG to that? - Just exit/reenter town if that happens. Whatever. - Get the needle, give it to the wizard, wing back to Aliahan and save. (Resurrect if necessary, do NOT use the inn) Bombcrag Manipulation - Use file 2, message speed 7 - Walk right, up one step, then right until you're standing below the last mountain. - Pause here until the hero pulls his sword back TWICE. It's pretty precise. - Keep moving toward the bombcrag area. Exact movement shouldn't matter but maybe don't walk higher than you need to? Kill the bombcrags and here my notes will get vague for a bit because I'm tired. Go to Isis. Either re-set the RNG seed, or don't. (I told you so) - Doing so may allow you to skip saving at the queen? But I haven't experimented with that, and you want that wizard ring anyway. It'd just save some overworld movement. Save at the queen and reset the game. - Select File 2, message speed 6. - Load the file, take one step right, and then walk downward until you are one tile above the cat on the right - Wait until the cat is one step away from passing in front of you, and wing to Isis - Walk to the Magic Key - In my first attempt, I ended up getting an encounter on top of the chest, but in my next two attempts I was fine? Might depend on Discard Counter. Go to Dhama... (I'm skipping a lot of steps here) - Save the game - Reset, and select a message speed on slot two, then slot three. This will put File 3 last in SRAM after you next save your main file. - To get the eight metal slime manipulation, wait for the save-game-dude to shut up, dismiss the text box, and start moving after your characters' animation ticks once. - Hold down until you're outside, hold up until you find eight metal slimes on the first step. - If you leave too fast, it'll be the third step. If you leave without pausuing at all or if you're WAY too late, you won't find the slimes. After the grind, reset and select MS6 on file 2 to break the RNG for the rest of the run (With one exception) - Note that this slows down boss fights because your physical damage will always roll MINIMUM on damage ranges. - It has other side effects but I'm tired - There's theoretically a risk of your game crashing when you get into a fight, but in two runs I haven't seen it, and you always seem to get the same encounters in each area. Kill Kandar and get the boat Get the Staff of Thunder Now you collect the orbs. Do it in whatever order you want, but I recommend saving Orochi for last... You may have very little EXP/gold with this routing... - Go north to Eginbear and get the Vase of Drought - Return to REEVE and go north. Pick up the Jipang Return point and continue north to get the Final Key. - Previous route sailed south from Aliahan, but if you get into an encounter outside Aliahan your game will freeze (Low chance, but run = over) - Return to REEVE and go east to get the pirate orb (1) - Return to Portoga and get the orb from Tedanki (2) and Lamp of Darkness - Return to REEVE and go west to Lancel. Get the Armor of Terrafirma and the orb (3) (Should be a cakewalk; enemy attacks also do minimal damage) - Return to Eginbear -> Samanao -> Mirror of Ra -> dwdBossBeTrolling -> Staff of Change - Return to Eginbear -> Sailor's Thigh Bone - Return to Romaly -> Ghost Ship -> Locket of Love - Return to Lancel (Jipang?) -> Sword of Gaia - Return to Jipang -> Orochi -> Orochi -> Orb (4) - Return to Assaram (Don't save. Yolo.) and go through the Necrogond to get the Silver Orb (5) - Merchant sidequest (6) (Offload as many key items as possible; you want your full inventory for herbs against Zoma) - Return to Kanave -> Ramia - Return to Dhama -> Leaf -> Sphere of Light - If you don't have it yet, and can afford it, go get the Sacred Robe from Lancel for the Pilgrim. Doubt you can, though. Innards - Save the game and reset. This is the exception; do not select a message speed. This will use File 3's checksum. - Walk most of the way to Baramos. You'll hit a fight with four Evil Mages on a screen I can't describe tonight. - If you dodge the fight with Heal, you might make it to Baramos without any encounters - Pray Death-Beauty - After Baramos, you'll want to seed the RNG with File 2 again. - You will not be able to afford the Sword of Kings so don't even try (unless you're doing something different from me) - Get the gold chest at the entrance of the Tower of Kol if you don't have the Sacred Robe yet. - That god damn metal babble you find on the bottom two floors will tease you but don't fall for it - After you get to Rimuldar, get the Ring of Life and drop any weak equipment you have (shields) and go buy as many herbs as you can carry... - Maybe leave room for a Wizard's Ring but honestly it's not important - DO leave room for the Sage's Stone. - Maybe the Leaf but again honestly it won't save you; you're too weak. - Walk to Zoma. - Granite Titans will be slow, but they won't hurt you too badly - Ortega/Hydra fight will be PAINFULLY slow... - King Hydra fight is free, just spam Sage's Stone - Bomus fight is dangerous. Just cast Sap on turn one, Bikill at least one character, and you should be okay. - Gonus fight is free. Cast Increase if you have the MP (you don't need MP for Zoma) and then one or two Bikills. - Zoma fight is Spray and Pray. Throw herbs, all the herbs. Oh god please die.
